Remembering Dr. George M. Flattery
International MinistriesAssemblies of God World Missions joins the Flattery family, former students, and friends worldwide in honoring the life and ministry of Dr. George M. Flattery, who passed away on Friday, August 8, 2025, at the age of 88. He entered eternity peacefully, with the same dignity and steadfast faith that marked his life.
For more than 50 years of full-time missionary service with AGWM, George and his wife, Esther, dedicated themselves to the Great Commission. Their ministry blended a deep love for people with an extraordinary vision for using every available means to proclaim the gospel to all nations.
George’s heart for missions began early. As a child, he spent formative years in Upper Volta (now Burkina Faso), where his parents served as missionaries. Those experiences, surrounded by the realities and opportunities of global ministry, gave him a lifelong sense of calling that would guide his education, ministry, and leadership.
Envisioned by Dr. Flattery and rooted deeply in world missions, the International Correspondence Institute was established to bring evangelism, discipleship, workers’ training, and bachelor’s degrees to unreached corners of the globe. That vision grew into Global University, which today works directly with students and in cooperation with Bible schools worldwide, offering programs from popular Bible studies to accredited undergraduate and graduate degrees. Dr. Flattery served as president for more than three decades and later as chancellor, continuing to champion accessible, high-quality theological education.
Recognizing the potential of emerging digital platforms, George and Esther later founded Network211, an evangelism and discipleship ministry using the Internet to connect with people in nearly every country. Guided by the vision to proclaim Christ, build a global community of believers, and partner with ministries worldwide, Network211 has made Gospel presentations to 64.1 million individuals, with 4.1 million of them making an evangelism response, and over 586,000 wrote to begin a discipleship connection. Evangelism content is offered in seventeen languages, including the ten most used languages on the Internet.
In addition to his leadership roles, Dr. Flattery was a respected theologian and prolific author. His multi-volume A Biblical Theology of the Holy Spirit and other works have shaped Pentecostal thought and encouraged believers toward Spirit-empowered living. His example of servant leadership, integrity, and perseverance has inspired missionaries, pastors, and students in every region where AGWM serves.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at Central Assembly of God in Springfield, Missouri, with visitation from noon to 1 p.m., followed by the service at 1 p.m.
We give thanks for the life and ministry of Dr. George M. Flattery — a faithful servant of the gospel whose legacy will endure until the task is complete.
